Carl Downs is a software architect and technologist based in Austin, Texas, with over thirty years of experience building enterprise systems and a US patent in database architecture. A computer scientist by training and a layperson to physics, he developed WaveTree by pressing Einstein's elevator — and the habit of substrate reasoning — against the open gaps in modern cosmology. The essay was prepared in collaboration with Anthropic's Claude, acting as subject‑matter translator.
